Biography

Dr. Amrita Ghatak is an Associate Professor of Economics in the School of Liberal Arts and Design Studies at the Vidyashilp University (VU). Before joining VU, she was an Assistant Professor at the Gujarat Institute of Development Research (GIDR), an ICSSR and Govt of Gujarat supported research institute in Ahmedabad. She also worked at Research Associate at various organizations such as Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi and Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore. Her research works have been in the areas of inclusive development and policies encompassing health, labour, environment and social security. She focuses on the intersectionality and linkages among these components that have bearing with the development process in both rural and urban contexts. Following both the qualitative and quantitative techniques she uses mixed methodology of empirical/applied research. Dr. Ghatak’s work has been published in scholarly journals, books and working papers.

Dr. Ghatak completed Ph.D degree from Mysore University through ISEC in Bangalore. Her Ph.D thesis: “Health, Labour Supply and Wages: A Study in West Bengal” was conferred with the prestigious V.K.R.V Rao award for the best thesis in Economics submitted during the period from 2009 to 2014 at ISEC. After Ph.D, she also completed a Post-doctoral fellowship from the Global Change Programme, Jadavpur University in Kolkata. He Post-doctoral work looked into the low- carbon and economically viable growth path of Kolkata city. The study was funded by Leeds University, UK. Before Ph.D degree, she completed MA degree in Economics with optional papers in Econometrics and Applied Econometrics from University of Kalyani, Kalyani. She obtained BA (Honours) in economics from the same university through Kalyani Mahavidyalaya, Kalyani.
