P S Sastry obtained B.Sc(Hons) in Physics from IIT, Kharagpur, and BE & PhD from IISc, Bangalore. He joined the faculty of the department of Electrical Engineering in 1986 and retired as a professor in 2024. Currently he is an Honorary Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, IISc, Bangalore. He held the Chairmanship of the Department of Electrical Engineering and ABB Chair Professor at IISc. He held visiting positions at University of Massachusetts, Amherst; University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; General Motors Research Laboratories, Warren; Texas A&M University, College Station, USA. His research interests include Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning, Neural Networks, Pattern Recognition, Data Mining and Computational Neuroscience. He received C.V. Raman Award for Young Scientists from Government of Karnataka, Hari Om Ashram Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Award from PRL, Ahmadabad, Most Valued Colleague Award from General Motors Corporation, and Alumni Award for Excellence in Research from Indian Institute of Science. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences, India.
