Sonia is an artist‐educator, with over twenty years of professional practice. Since 2012 she has taught Foundation studies, Contemporary Arts and Design courses at institutions such as the Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design & Technology, NIFT, LISAA School of Design, Ecole Intuit Lab, and NID in Bengaluru. She has also mentored graduate and post-graduate projects and lead workshops on drawing and image making practices, visual literacy, soft sculpture, creativity, place‐based and contextual enquiry, interdisciplinary exploration and embodied practice. Her arts practice extends to exhibitions, residencies and workshops. Her work has been exhibited in several group exhibitions, solo exhibitions at GallerySKE and Sua House, Bengaluru, and museum exhibitions, which include the Museum of Art and Photography in Bengaluru, Dakshina Chitra Museum in Chennai, Casa Masaccio Arte Contemporanea Museum in San Giovanni Valdarno. Her work has also been shown in other international venues and biennales in Srilanka, South Korea, UK, Italy and Prague. She has facilitated drawing and image making workshops for the British Council for the Big Draw Campaign for Drawing, as well for the Homelands Exhibition, at NGMA Bengaluru. Her awards include the Robert Bosch Art Grant (2009), Finalist for the FICA Emerging Artist Award (2011) and a nomination for the Rolex Mentor &Protégé Arts Initiative (2013). Her work has featured in several publications, some noteworthy ones being Emerging Asian Artists, Gwangju Bienalle Press (2010), and Visible/Invisible Representation of Women in Art through the MAP collection (2022). In addition to her art practice, Sonia also has represented Karnataka and India in competitive swimming and water polo, and holds an international certification as a Teacher for swimming and water safety from AUSTSWIM, Australia (2023). She has taught swimming and water safety, and contributed to curriculum development initiatives that integrate aquatic education into schools and institutions.
