Prof. Sugata Marjit

Prof. Sugata Marjit is a distinguished economist and currently serves as the Director of the School for Training and Analytical Research in Economics, Business and Society (STAREBS). He also holds positions as a Visiting Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and an Honorary Professor at CSSSC, India. Prof. Marjit's has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Rochester (1985), where he also earned his MA in 1983. Earlier, he completed his MA in Economics at Calcutta University (1980), graduating as a Gold Medalist, and his BA (Honors) in Economics from Presidency College, Calcutta.
His professional journey is characterized by numerous impactful roles. From October 2019 to December 2024, he was the First Distinguished Professor at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Kolkata. He served as the Reserve Bank of India Professor of Industrial Economics at CSSSC from 2003 to 2021 and was the Director of CSSSC from 2007 to 2012. Notably, he also held the position of Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta from 2015 to 2016. His experience also includes professorships at City University of Hong Kong, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indian Statistical Institute, and Jadavpur University, alongside various visiting appointments at prestigious institutions globally, such as the University of Rochester, Cornell University, and the International Monetary Fund. Prof. Marjit has earned significant recognition for his contributions to economics. He received the A. L. Nagar Fellowship and Gold Medal in 2020, the Mahala Nobis Memorial Medal in 2002, and the V.K.R.V. Rao National Award for Young Social Scientist in 2003. His research impact is highlighted by his ranking among the Top 1% in Asia and Top 5% Worldwide by REPEC and among the Top 5% of Researchers/Authors across scientific disciplines by ResearchGate. In 2018, he was honored as the Most Outstanding Researcher in Economics, Econometrics and Finance in India by Careers 360 National Award. A prolific scholar, Prof. Marjit has authored and edited several influential books, including "Virtual Trade in A Changing World" (2023) and "The Outsiders: Economic Reform and Informal Labor in a Developing Economy" (2011). His extensive body of work also includes over 80 research papers published in leading journals such as Journal of Policy Modeling, Review of International Economics, and Journal of Development Economics. Beyond his academic pursuits, Prof. Marjit has made substantial contributions to public service and research administration. He served as the Former Chairman of the West Bengal State Council of Higher Education and was the Project Director for the Centre for Training and Research in Public Finance and Policy (CTRPFP). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the South Asian Journal of Macroeconomics and Public Finance and is a frequent economic commentator on television and radio. Demonstrating a diverse range of talents, he is also a trained Hindustani Classical Vocalist, performing in concerts around the world.
